Mobile Number Portability in India

Mobile Number Portability is available in India from Jan 20, 2011.

Here are the steps to change your service provider.

Steps:

• SMS <PORT 9800012345> to <1900>
• You will get an SMS reply contains the Unique Porting Code. This is valid for only 24 hours.
• Inform to the preferred operator quoting the Unique Porting Code with documents.
• Your New operator will check existing operator and if no pending dues, then approval will be given
• You will get an SMS stating the date and time of Porting change.
• You will get a confirmation message from new operator after successful change.

Important Points:

• Charge for this service is Rs.19
• Your phone may be dead for 2 hours during Port Change.
• Switch is possible between GSM or CDMA
• Circle change is not possible E.g., Mumbai users can't switch to an operator in Bangalore Service area.
• Postpaid to prepaid also possible.
• In prepaid, the available balance can't be carry forward. You will lose your previous balance if any.
• Any user with 90 days in any operator can change to other operator. Again he needs to wait for 90 days to switch again.
• Porting time could be anything between 24 hours to 4 days.
